RoboForm vs FillWise: AI Autofill vs a Password Manager
Both tools promise to fill forms in one click, so they end up compared. They solve different problems, though. RoboForm is a password manager that also fills forms from the details you saved in it. FillWise is an AI form filler that reads whatever you give it at the moment, an email, a passport photo, a PDF, and fills the form in front of you. Many people are better off with both.
We build FillWise, a Chrome extension, so this is a vendor's view. Everything said about RoboForm below comes from roboform.com as it read in October 2026; check their site for anything that has changed since.
What RoboForm does
RoboForm describes itself as a password manager and form filling solution. From its own pages:
- Passwords first. It saves and fills logins, generates strong passwords, stores passkeys, audits weak ones and works across browsers and devices, including private mode.
- Form filling from saved data. "Fill in all your payment and address details with a single click." It also says it can fill forms "on behalf of a family member or client" and save and fill complicated, custom forms.
- Zero knowledge. Your data is encrypted with AES-256, and RoboForm states it has a zero knowledge infrastructure: it cannot read what you store.
- Pricing. A free plan with unlimited passwords on a single device; Premium listed at $2.49 a month billed annually; a Family plan for up to five accounts; separate business plans.
The key word in all of this is saved. RoboForm fills what you entered into it beforehand: your addresses, your cards, a client's details you set up as a profile, a form it learned from you. That is its strength for repeated personal forms and its limit for everything else.
What FillWise does
FillWise is a side panel in Chrome. You open a form, give it the source and press Fill form:
- Any source, nothing to set up. Paste a client's email, notes or a CRM record in any format, or attach a photo, scan or PDF. Passports and IDs in more than 100 languages are read by the AI, including non-Latin scripts.
- Fields matched by meaning. The AI reads each label on the page and decides what goes where. "Purpose of visit", "Employer's address" and "Have you been refused a visa before" get answers from your text, and questions it has no answer for stay empty.
- PDF forms. Fillable PDFs are completed field by field, including checkboxes and dropdowns. Flat PDFs with no real fields get values placed on their lines, with an editor to adjust before download.
- Someone else's data, every time. A different client on every fill is the normal case, not an extra profile to maintain.
- Repeats are cheap. A form FillWise has filled before, filled again from typed text, does not spend a fill: unlimited on paid plans, 20 a week on the free plan.
What it does not do: store or fill passwords, store card numbers, or fill anything in the background.
Where they differ
Where the data comes from. RoboForm needs the data inside it first. For your own address and card that is a one-time setup and works forever. For a stream of different clients, each new person is a new profile to type before the form can be filled. FillWise skips that step: the email the client sent you is the source.
Which fields get filled. A saved profile has a fixed set of fields: name, address, phone, payment. Government, visa, insurance and onboarding forms are mostly questions outside that set. An AI filler reads the question and looks for the answer in your source; a profile filler can only offer the fields it holds.
PDF forms. RoboForm's feature list talks about web forms. PDF forms are not among the features it lists. FillWise fills PDFs opened in Chrome, and in the account without the extension.
Security model. This is where RoboForm is ahead by design. It keeps your saved data encrypted so that RoboForm itself cannot read it. FillWise has to send the form's field labels and your source text to its server, and in most fills to an AI provider, to do the matching. It does not store them afterwards, but they do leave your browser.

AI autofill vs password manager autofill
The difference comes down to one question: is the data already saved somewhere, or does it arrive with the form?
- Your own logins, cards and addresses. Saved once, used for years. A password manager is the right tool, and RoboForm or any good alternative does it better than an AI filler would.
- Other people's data that arrives as documents. A passport photo from a client, an intake email, a spreadsheet row. Typing it into a profile first only adds a step. An AI filler takes the document as it is.
- Questions instead of contact fields. "Reason for travel", "previous employer", "list all addresses in the last five years". No profile has these; your notes do.
Many agents, paralegals and HR coordinators end up with both: a password manager for the portal logins and FillWise for the forms behind them. They do not get in each other's way, because FillWise fills only when you click.
Which one for which form
- Signing in to a visa portal. RoboForm.
- The visa application inside it, for a client. FillWise, from the client's passport photo and notes.
- Online shop checkout. RoboForm, or Chrome's own autofill.
- A USCIS or IRS PDF. FillWise. See the guide to filling government forms.
- The same supplier form every month for your own company. Either works. RoboForm if you want it fully offline and saved; FillWise if the details change each time.
What to check by hand
Whichever tool fills the form, you submit it:
- Names and numbers character by character against the source.
- Date formats the form does not label.
- Dropdowns with look-alike options.
- Questions your source does not answer. FillWise leaves them empty instead of guessing.
Privacy
RoboForm keeps your vault encrypted with zero knowledge. FillWise works differently: for a web form, the field labels and your source data go to its server and the AI provider for one fill and are not stored. Fillable PDFs are read in your browser, so only the list of fields and your data leave it. Details are on the privacy and data security page. If a form asks nothing but your own saved details, a password manager is the more private choice.
Pricing
RoboForm has a free plan for one device and Premium from $2.49 a month billed annually, per its pricing page. FillWise is free for 20 fills to start and 5 a week after that, with no card; paid plans start at $19 for 100 fills a month, on the pricing section. A fill is one web form, or one PDF up to 5 pages.
